One Step Closer: Bathroom Progress & Unexpected Kindness

It’s been a long road, but I’m happy to share that the bathroom renovation is nearly complete! There are still a couple of finishing touches left, but the space is fully functional, and the transformation has already made a huge difference.

A Big Win: Creating a Warm & Inviting Space

One of the highlights of this project was the tile selection. Thanks to someone arranging a significant discount, Mum was able to choose something beyond just plain white, ensuring the space feels warm and inviting rather than cold and clinical. With everything Mum and Shane face daily with his MND diagnosis, having a space that feels like home, not a hospital, is so important for maintaining a sense of normality.

What’s Done

  • Cabinets installed and looking great
  • Plumbing done, thanks to the team from Travis Capp Plumbing who have donated all of their time and materials on this project.
  • Toilet, shower, and basin in place
  • Electrical fit-off complete, thanks to Shane from Cadelec who has donated all of his time on this project.

A particularly touching moment came when Shane from Cadelec went to pick up the rest of the electrical supplies from CNW Clyde North. When the team there found out what the supplies were for, they wiped the bill completely, another generous donation that was so appreciated and completely unexpected. The kindness and generosity from so many people throughout this project have been overwhelming in the best way possible.

A Minor Setback

Of course, no project is without its hiccups. When we removed the protective film from the new tap during installation, we discovered it was completely smashed on top. Unfortunately, the damage wasn’t visible until the film came off. Since we had received the tap about six weeks earlier, there was some back-and-forth with the supplier about replacing it. While they didn’t cover the full cost, they did meet us partway, and we were able to get a replacement for about a third of the original price. A bit frustrating, but getting this project finished was the priority.

The only catch? The tap is out of stock and won’t arrive until early to mid-April. So, while the bathroom is nearly operational, the vanity sink will be tap-less for a few more weeks!

What’s Left

  • Supply & Fit of the Mirror (this has been donated by Dindi Glass & Glazing) https://www.facebook.com/dindiglass/
  • Fitting the curtain rail and shower curtain
  • Fitting the replacement tap

Why This Renovation Matters Now More Than Ever

This renovation couldn’t have come at a more crucial time. Shane has recently noticed some weakness in one of his hands, and he also had a fall at home. Thankfully, aside from some bruises, he wasn’t seriously injured. Having a safer, more accessible bathroom couldn’t come soon enough, and it’s a relief to see this project nearing the finish line.

Looking Ahead: The Next Challenge

In related news, we’ve realised that Mum and Shane will need to start looking for an accessible vehicle sooner rather than later. As Shane’s reliance on his wheelchair increases, having a car that he can get in and out of easily, and that Mum can manage with the wheelchair, will be essential. But that’s a topic for another blog post!

For now, we’re just incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped along the way. The generosity and kindness shown throughout this process have been beyond what we ever expected. We’re so close to the finish line, and we can’t wait to share the final reveal soon!

The Harsh Reality: The Cost of a Terminal Diagnosis

A diagnosis like motor neurone disease isn’t just devastating emotionally, it’s financially crippling, especially in Australia for those over 65. Unlike younger individuals who can access the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), those over 65 must rely on the aged care system, which is significantly underfunded and not designed for progressive, high-care conditions like MND.

For Mum and Shane, this means they’re using what little retirement savings they have to fill the funding gaps. Every modification, every piece of equipment, and every necessary adaptation comes at a cost—one that isn’t fully covered by government assistance. The bathroom renovation alone has been a massive expense, and without some of the amazing donations and discounts we’ve received, this project probably wouldn’t have been possible.

Between donated services, materials, and financial contributions, nearly half of this bathroom has been funded through generosity of others. That kind of support is beyond what we ever expected, and we are just so grateful. Every bit of help has not only made this renovation possible but has also eased some of the overwhelming financial pressure that comes with a terminal diagnosis.

Long-term, the financial strain will only increase. As Shane’s mobility declines, more adjustments will be needed, an accessible vehicle, ongoing equipment upgrades, and eventually, higher levels of care. Mum is not only facing the emotional toll of watching her husband’s condition progress but also the harsh reality of navigating a system that doesn’t provide nearly enough support.

This is why every act of generosity, every donation, and every bit of assistance has meant the world. It’s not just about making life easier, it’s about making sure Shane can live with dignity and comfort for as long as possible.
